Last night, I was having a conversation with my oldest child about what it means to have courage. One of his teachers defined it as going up against an external force that could hurt you, but you do it anyway. While that definition isn’t wrong, it doesn’t cover the full meaning of the word courage.
Courage isn’t just present in the external battles we face. It take courage to tackle our internal battles as well. Quietly battling your anxiety or OCD takes courage. Thinking positive thoughts when you want to break takes courage. Other times, simply being who you truly are takes courage. Sometimes, it’s these internal battles that require the most courage.
Tonight, I want you to think about your definition of courage and write an example that represents it. What ways have you seen courage manifest in the world around you? How have you shown courage? Be brave and dig deep. Don’t discount the little moments of courage that happen daily.
Spend 10 minutes writing. Don’t stop to edit. Remember, these prompts don’t need to be perfect. Some of the best bits of writing come from raw, unedited material that you take and reshape into something polished.
Be well and happy writing.
