A few years ago, I picked up a pocket-sized book called 642 Tiny Things to Write About by The San Francisco Writers’ Grotto. Whenever I’m struggling to write, I pull this book out of my desk drawer and flip through the pages. Some of the prompts are random, some are funny, or intriguing. Once I find one, I make myself write on the chosen prompt for five minutes without stopping.
That’s what we’re going to do today. As always, feel free to go longer than five minutes. Who knows, it could lead you to an idea for a new story. Today’s prompt is near the back of the book:
“Take the worst movie you’ve ever seen and write an extremely positive and pretentious movie review.”
One of the reasons why I like this prompt, is because it requires us to rethink something we’ve previously disliked and find the positive in it. It’s not a bad skill to have in writing or in life.
Write for five minutes. Don’t stop, don’t edit, just write.
Have fun and happy writing!
